New York: Fashion A-Z

Highlights from the Collection of the Museum at FIT is currently exhibiting at FIT in New York. 
The exhibit showcases garments from older to contemporary designers alphabetically. Designers featured run the gamut from Balmain, Comme des Garcons, Christian Dior to Paco Rabanne. A gold beaded evening dress from Ralph Lauren’s spring 2007 collection is the opening feature greeting visitors at the entrance. A taupe, rust crepe gown from 1945 by designer Adrian starts off the show. Also featured is a color-block version of a Stephen Burrows dress worn by model Pat Cleveland during the Battle of Versailles fashion show which had American designers competing with French designers. Other standouts include a black wool knit leather ensemble from Ann Demeulemeester’s 1996 collection featuring the designer’s signature dark palette and austere lines. A wool ensemble from Jean Paul Gaultier’s fall 2010  collection for Hermes also made it into the mix. Martin Margiela’s linen sleeveless jacket from his spring 1997  collection was also on view. Xuly Bet’s 1994 dress made from five cardigans and top made from pantyhose was also on view. Rick Owens’ elegant and edgy dress coat from spring 2011 was also included.
